Looking for the next SA Youth School Assistant application? The first thing to know is whether recruitment is actually open. Here is the current application status, what you can prepare now and how the PYEI School Assistant process works when applications are available.

Is the SA Youth School Assistant Application Currently Open?

No new PYEI/BEEI School Assistant recruitment phase has been officially announced as open.

Application status last checked: 5 October 2026.

This means there is currently no confirmed application period, closing date or new recruitment timetable to follow.

⚠️ Be careful with posts claiming that applications are open. Do not rely on an unofficial Facebook post, WhatsApp message or website simply because it provides an application date or link.

For the latest announcements, check:

While recruitment is closed, you can prepare by making sure you can access your SA Youth account and that your cellphone number, location, education and other profile information are current.

Who Qualifies for PYEI School Assistant Opportunities?

The eligibility rules can change between recruitment phases. The requirements for the next phase should only be treated as confirmed once the Department of Basic Education publishes the relevant call.

Previous phases of the Basic Education Employment Initiative have targeted young people who are not employed or studying/training, while young people with disabilities and women have also been encouraged to participate.

Requirements have also considered factors such as:

  • age;
  • employment and study status;
  • identification;
  • where the applicant lives;
  • education and qualifications; and
  • requirements associated with the specific School Assistant role.

📍 Location can be particularly important. School-based recruitment may include rules about how close applicants must live to the school where they want to work.

However, do not assume that an age limit, distance rule or other eligibility condition from a previous phase will automatically apply to the next one.

When a new SA Youth School Assistant application period is announced, read the current eligibility criteria before applying — even if you have participated in or applied for an earlier phase.

Education Assistant vs General School Assistant: What Is the Difference?

PYEI/BEEI school opportunities have historically included two broad categories: Education Assistant (EA) and General School Assistant (GSA).

Education Assistant (EA)

Education Assistants primarily support teaching, learning and other educational activities.

Previous phases have included roles such as:

  • Education Assistant – Curriculum;
  • Education Assistant – ICT/e-Cadres; and
  • Education Assistant – Reading Champions.

For example, ICT/e-Cadres have supported teachers and learners with technology and educational content, while Reading Champions have helped promote reading and literacy.

In previous recruitment, Education Assistant applicants were required to have passed Matric English. NQF Level 4, 6 or 7 qualifications could provide an additional advantage.

General School Assistant (GSA)

General School Assistants cover other forms of support required in the school environment.

Previous roles have included:

  • Child & Youth Care Worker;
  • Handyman/Infrastructure Support; and
  • Sports and Enrichment Agent.

The duties can vary considerably. A handyman may support school infrastructure maintenance, while a Sports and Enrichment Agent can assist with sport, arts and cultural activities.

Some previous GSA positions, including certain infrastructure and sports roles, did not require Matric. Relevant trade qualifications could be an advantage for applicable roles.

🎓 Not having Matric has therefore not automatically excluded applicants from every type of School Assistant opportunity.

These examples explain the difference between EA and GSA roles, but the next recruitment notice will determine which positions are available and what education each one requires.

How to Apply for School Assistant Jobs on SAYouth.mobi

You cannot submit a new application until an eligible recruitment opportunity is open. Once a new phase is officially announced, check its specific instructions before applying.

The general process is:

  1. Go to the official SAYouth.mobi website.
  2. Log in to your existing SA Youth account. If you do not have an account, complete the registration process.
  3. Check that your cellphone number, address, location, education and other profile information are correct.
  4. Find the available School Assistant opportunities for which you are eligible.
  5. Review the role and school information carefully before choosing an opportunity.
  6. Complete the application information requested for that recruitment phase.
  7. Review your details before submitting, particularly your contact and education information.
  8. Submit the application before the official closing date and follow any further instructions displayed by SA Youth.

📱 Do not create another SA Youth account simply because you cannot remember your password. Recover your existing account or contact SA Youth support if necessary.

The exact screens, questions and application requirements may change in a future recruitment phase. Follow the instructions shown on SAYouth.mobi when applications officially reopen.

Documents and Information You Need Before Applying

Because the next recruitment phase has not yet been announced, there is no new confirmed document checklist to follow.

You can still prepare the basic information likely to be relevant to your SA Youth profile and application:

  • your identification details;
  • active cellphone number;
  • accessible email address, if applicable;
  • current address and location;
  • personal information;
  • education history;
  • qualifications and certificates; and
  • relevant work or other experience.

🪪 Make sure your information is accurate. Names and identification details should be consistent with your official documents.

Education requirements can depend on the position. As previous phases have shown, an Education Assistant role and a General School Assistant role may not require the same qualifications.

Do not obtain or upload additional documents solely because an unofficial advert says they are compulsory. Wait for the current recruitment notice to confirm exactly what is required.

How to Check Your School Assistant Application Status

When you have submitted an application during an active recruitment phase, keep checking your SA Youth account and registered contact channels for information relating to your application.

Make sure you:

  • keep your cellphone number current;
  • keep your phone available;
  • check SMS messages;
  • check your email regularly; and
  • follow any instructions provided through your SA Youth account.

📩 SMS messages from SA Youth start with #SAYouth, which can help you identify communications from the platform.

The exact application statuses displayed may depend on the recruitment process. Do not assume you have been shortlisted or selected unless that information has been communicated through the appropriate channels.

Watch out for School Assistant scams

Recruitment periods can attract misleading posts and fake offers.

🚨 Treat requests for payment as a warning sign. SA Youth registration and use of the platform are free.

Be cautious if someone:

  • promises you a School Assistant position in exchange for money;
  • sends you to an unfamiliar application website;
  • asks for sensitive information through an unofficial social media account;
  • claims applications are open when SA Youth and the DBE have not announced them; or
  • guarantees that you will be hired.

When in doubt, return to SAYouth.mobi or check the Department of Basic Education before acting.

What Happens After You Apply?

Submitting a SA Youth School Assistant application does not mean you have been hired.

Applications must still go through the selection process established for that recruitment phase. Candidates who progress may receive further communication or instructions about the next stage.

📞 Keep your contact details up to date while you wait. Calls, SMS messages or emails may be used to communicate with applicants.

Do not rely on timelines from older phases to predict when you will hear back. Recruitment dates, placement periods and other milestones can change.

The same applies to programme duration and payment. Until a new phase is officially announced, stipend amounts and placement dates circulating online should not be treated as confirmed terms for the next intake.

If you need help with your SA Youth account, you can use the official SA Youth support page. Support is available from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays, and the toll-free number is 0800 72 72 72.

What to Do If You Are Not Selected

Not being selected for a School Assistant position does not mean you should stop using SA Youth.

You can:

  • keep your SA Youth profile accurate and up to date;
  • continue searching for other jobs, learnerships and development opportunities;
  • check SAYouth.mobi regularly;
  • monitor future PYEI/BEEI announcements; and
  • apply for other opportunities for which you meet the requirements.

🔄 Review your profile whenever your contact details, location, education or employment situation changes.

SA Youth is not exclusively a School Assistant application platform. It connects young people with different work, learning and development opportunities.

Even after a PYEI/BEEI recruitment period closes — or if you are not selected — keep your account active and continue checking SAYouth.mobi for opportunities that match your circumstances.
