How to Track Your Smart ID Status, Collection and Delivery

Anúncios

Waiting for a Smart ID can be frustrating when you do not know whether it is still being processed or already waiting for you. Before visiting a branch, check your status or notifications so you know what to do next.

How to Check if Your Smart ID Card Is Ready

The best place to start is the official digital channel linked to your application.

The My Home Affairs Online portal includes a Track Progress function for monitoring applications. If your application appears there, log into your account and check its current progress.

📱 If you applied through a Partner Branch, check your bank’s notifications too. Under the new DHA Partner Branch model, participating banks can provide application updates through their usual customer channels.

For example:

  • FNB says applicants may receive an SMS or in-app notification when a Smart ID is ready;
  • Standard Bank says Home Affairs sends an SMS when the document is ready;
  • Other participating banks may use their own communication channels.

Wait for confirmation that your document is ready rather than assuming that enough time has passed.

Can you check your Smart ID status by SMS?

DHA guidance has previously provided an SMS Track & Trace service: send ID followed by your 13-digit ID number to 32551, at a cost of R1 per SMS.

However, with DHA services moving to newer digital platforms, check the current official options before relying on an older SMS tracking method.

What does your application status mean?

The exact wording displayed can depend on the system and application route. As a general rule:

Processing or verification means the application is still being handled and the document is not yet ready for collection.

Production indicates that processing has progressed, but you should still wait for confirmation before travelling to collect the card.

Ready for collection, or a collection notification from DHA or your bank, means you should follow the instructions provided for receiving your document.

📌 A status update is more useful than an estimated turnaround time. Processing times can vary, so do not make an unnecessary trip based only on how many days have passed since you applied.

What to Do if Your Smart ID Is Taking Longer Than Expected

A delay does not automatically mean something has gone wrong. DHA remains responsible for verification, processing and production, and turnaround times can vary.

If your Smart ID status has not changed for longer than expected, start by checking the official tracking channel associated with your application.

Check before visiting a branch

Do not assume that going back to the branch will speed up production.

First:

  • Check your application status online, where available;
  • Look for SMS, email or in-app notifications;
  • Confirm that you have not missed a request for additional information;
  • Keep your application and payment references available.

⚠️ If your status remains unchanged or something appears incorrect, use an official support channel rather than submitting a second application.

Home Affairs can be contacted through:

If you applied through a Partner Branch, you can also check the bank’s normal service channels for any updates it has received.

What can hold up an application?

Identity and document applications require verification. If DHA needs to resolve inconsistent personal information, eligibility or supporting details, the application may require additional attention.

Do not try to correct a stalled application by starting another one unless DHA or the relevant service provider tells you to do so.

Keep your application reference, payment receipt and other relevant records until you have received your Smart ID.

How to Collect Your Smart ID Card

Once you have confirmation that the card is ready, follow the collection instructions associated with the route you used to apply.

Where you collect the Smart ID can depend on whether you applied through a DHA office or a participating bank.

🏦 Under the Partner Branch model, DHA says applicants can collect their Smart ID from their selected branch, while some banks may also offer delivery.

FNB, for example, tells applicants that they will receive an SMS or in-app notification when the Smart ID is ready for collection. Standard Bank similarly describes collection at the selected branch for its applicable Smart ID services.

Do you need an appointment to collect it?

There is no single booking rule that applies to every DHA office and Partner Branch.

Some services may require a collection appointment, while others provide different collection arrangements. Follow the instructions in your readiness notification and check the current requirements of the DHA office or bank before travelling.

📅 Do not assume that the application appointment rules are the same as the collection rules.

What should you take with you?

Requirements can differ according to the application route. Keep these available until your Smart ID is safely in your hands:

  • Application receipt or reference;
  • Booking or application confirmation;
  • Proof of payment, where applicable;
  • Existing identity documents requested for your particular application;
  • Temporary Identity Certificate, if one was issued and is requested.

If you are converting from a green ID book, check the current collection instructions for your application rather than assuming you must surrender the book.

⚠️ Do not discard your application records as soon as the card is approved. Keep them until collection or delivery is complete.

Some banks also impose collection deadlines. Absa’s Smart ID terms, for example, state that applicants must collect their card within six months of notification, after which it is returned to DHA.

This should not be treated as a universal deadline for every bank or DHA branch, so check the rules that apply to your collection point.

Smart ID Home Delivery and Courier Options

Smart ID delivery is becoming part of the new Partner Branch model, but it is not yet a universal option.

DHA’s Partner Branch information says that applicants can collect their card from the selected branch or have it delivered where the bank offers that service.

That distinction matters. The existence of Smart ID delivery does not mean every applicant can currently choose home delivery.

Availability may depend on:

  • The participating bank;
  • The branch or service used;
  • The applicant’s eligibility;
  • The delivery options currently offered by that bank.

If delivery is available for your application, follow the bank’s instructions regarding the address, identity verification and any applicable conditions or charges.

📦 Do not arrange an unofficial courier to collect your Smart ID. Use only a delivery option offered through the authorised application channel.

If delivery is not offered, follow your readiness notification and collect the document through the designated branch or DHA route.

Lost, Stolen or Damaged Smart ID: How to Get a Replacement

If you already had a Smart ID and it has been lost, stolen or damaged, you need a reissue or replacement — not a first-time application.

This distinction affects both the process and the fee.

The DHA information lists a R140 fee for a Smart ID reissue/replacement. This differs from a first-ever ID, which is issued free to qualifying first-time applicants.

It is also different from converting a green bar-coded ID book to a Smart ID. The official DHA requirements distinguish between first-time applicants, senior citizens converting their green IDs and other citizens moving to Smart IDs.

Smart ID Status, Collection and Delivery

Can you replace a Smart ID at a bank?

Yes, where the participating bank and branch currently offer that service.

The DHA Partner Branch model includes reissues for existing Smart ID holders, while individual banks have introduced replacement services at selected locations.

For example:

  • FNB offers lost, stolen or damaged Smart ID replacements at selected branches and says no appointment is required for that particular service;
  • Capitec includes lost, stolen and damaged Smart IDs in its current replacement service;
  • Availability at other Partner Branches depends on the service and rollout.

📍 Check the official DHA Partner Branch locator before travelling to find an eligible location.

Being a participating bank does not mean every branch provides every Smart ID service.

From application and biometrics to processing, Smart ID status, collection and possible delivery, the process is complete only when the document is safely in your hands. Keep your references, receipts and notifications until then.

📅 Still using a green ID book? Its production is due to end on 31 March 2027, while green ID books are set to stop being recognised as valid identification from 31 March 2028. If you have not switched yet, the transition to a Smart ID now has a clear deadline.
